The Richmond Local Municipality is a Category B municipality found within the uMgungundlovu District in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. It is located along the southern boundary of the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, approximately 38km south of Pietermaritzburg (the capital of KwaZulu-Natal) along the R56. It is one of the seven municipalities that make up the district.   The municipality is a place of great natural beauty with significant tourist attractions and immense aspirations to be the preferred destination to live, work and visit.

Richmond is regarded as the fruit and vegetable basket of the Province, as virtually every fruit and vegetable imaginable is grown in the area.

The Baynesfield Estate Museum is made up of a few different sites, giving you a look at the life of Yorkshire born Joseph Bayne who was a Byrne Settler and who founded the Baynesfield Estate museum. During his life as an enthusiastic and hard working agriculturist, he accumulated many farms now known as Baynesfield Esate.
